EDITOR'S LETTER
Some things can only be born from fire.
Obsidian is one of them. A volcanic stone, it carries on its dark surface the memory of a transformation: matter that once existed in a molten state and found a new way to exist. Its appearance can be delicate, almost mirror-like, yet beneath that surface lies a remarkable strength, capable of revealing unexpected beauty even through fracture.
I have always been drawn to this idea. The possibility of change, of breaking away from a former version of ourselves and discovering something new in what we once believed was lost. Perhaps because, deep down, RENATUS was born from that very need: the desire to begin again, to explore new forms of expression, and to understand that reinventing ourselves does not mean losing who we are.
Reaching our tenth issue holds a special meaning. Ten editions, ten different ways of telling stories, and one intention that remains unchanged: to use fashion, photography, and culture as tools to explore who we are and who we have the potential to become.
For this edition, we step into the universe of OBSIDIAN, a collection created by designer Edwin Ramírez and brought to life by Elena Hidalgo, Miss Costa Rica 2024, dressed head to toe in his designs. Through this collection, we explore an aesthetic that finds its strength in darkness, texture, and presence. Elena embodies the duality that fascinates me about obsidian: a beauty that does not need to soften itself to be admired, and a strength that does not need to be explained to be felt.
We also present an exclusive interview with Elena Hidalgo, an opportunity to connect with the person behind the image, discover her story, and explore what exists beyond a crown, a photograph, or a cover. Because, to me, an image can capture a moment, but it is the story behind it that makes it last.
As part of our commitment to those building their own creative paths, this edition also invites us to look toward the future through our academic recommendation: studying Fashion Design at Universidad Creativa. I deeply believe in the importance of giving talent room to grow, while providing the tools to challenge conventions, develop new perspectives, and turn ideas into something tangible. Creativity may come naturally; learning how to nurture it is a decision that can change everything.
Over the years, I have come to understand that not every transformation is visible. Some happen in silence, others emerge from moments we would never have chosen, and many begin when we dare to look at our own stories from a different perspective. We may not always be able to control the fire that passes through us, but we can discover what to do with what remains.
Obsidian does not try to resemble any other stone. It has its own marks, its own light, and its own way of reflecting the world. Perhaps that is its greatest lesson: we do not need to become someone else to begin again. Sometimes, all we need is to recognize our essence and allow ourselves to discover a new way of expressing it.
Thank you for being part of this journey, for believing in RENATUS, and for continuing to find in these pages a space for beauty, ideas, and stories worth telling.
This is our tenth issue. A new surface, a new perspective, and another opportunity to discover what we are capable of creating.
With love,

YOUR DREAM DESERVES A FIRST STEP
In collaboration with Universidad Creativa
It is never too late to become the person you once dreamed of being.
For as long as I can remember, fashion has been one of the ways I understand the world. Through photography, makeup, and my work as Editor-in-Chief of RENATUS MAGAZINE, I have spent years exploring creativity from different perspectives. Along the way, I also built a career in cybersecurity, an entirely different world that has taught me discipline, structure, and the value of constantly learning.
But there was always something calling me back.
After ten years away from the classroom, I made the decision to return to my studies and pursue my passion for fashion design. Going back to university has reminded me that our dreams do not necessarily disappear with time. Sometimes, they simply wait for us to be ready to give them another chance.
Taking that first step can feel intimidating. We question our timing, our abilities, and whether we are starting too late. We convince ourselves that we should have done it years ago. But the truth is that there is no perfect moment to begin pursuing something that genuinely matters to us.
This year, I chose to begin again.
Through Universidad Creativa, I am embarking on a new chapter in my creative journey, one that I look forward to sharing with you throughout the upcoming editions of RENATUS MAGAZINE. I want to take you behind the scenes of this experience, introduce you to my classmates, share what we are learning, and document the challenges, discoveries, and moments that make this journey worthwhile.
Because this is not just about studying fashion. It is about giving ourselves permission to grow, to explore a different version of who we are, and to invest in the future we want to create.
If you have always dreamed of working in fashion, designing your own collections, or turning your creativity into a career, consider this your sign to take the first step.
Your dream does not need to remain a distant possibility. It can become your next chapter.
Explore your possibilities with Universidad Creativa and give yourself the opportunity to discover just how far your passion can take you.
As for me, this is only the beginning. And I cannot wait to share the journey with you.

Me encanta bailar mientras cocino, cantar y hacerle muecas a mi hija. Creo que nadie se imagina algo así.

OBSIDIAN: REBIRTH IN THE SHADOWS
Elena Hidalgo wears OBSIDIANA, a collection by designer Edwin Ramírez.
All authentic light is born from having walked through darkness.
Obsidian is born from volcanic fire. When lava cools rapidly, it transforms into a natural volcanic glass with a deep black color and a distinctive sheen. Within its surface, darkness and light coexist, along with an apparent fragility and a strength revealed through every fracture. It is a material that invites us to reflect on transformation, the changes that leave their mark on us, and the possibility of finding a new way of being after every rupture.
Inspired by this volcanic stone, designer Edwin Ramírez presents OBSIDIANA, a collection that transcends clothing to become a visual metaphor for personal evolution. Through structured silhouettes, geometric lines, asymmetry, and textiles with reflective finishes, the collection explores the relationship between identity, introspection, and inner strength.
Each garment represents a stage in this journey. Angular cuts evoke the fractures that transform our perception; reflective surfaces and layered fabrics suggest the search for self-knowledge, while defined structures convey confidence, protection, and determination. Black dominates the composition, accompanied by subtle contrasts that add depth and balance. The result is an aesthetic of striking elegance, where power does not need to announce itself through excess.
To bring this story to life, Elena Hidalgo, Miss Costa Rica 2024, wears Edwin Ramírez's creations from head to toe. Her presence adds a human dimension to the OBSIDIANA narrative: that of a woman who has moved through different stages of life, learned to trust her own voice, and discovered that resilience is also part of one's identity.
Her experience as a model, her journey through Miss Universe, and her experience of motherhood have all contributed to transforming the way she sees herself. Closed doors, challenges, and unexpected opportunities have become part of a story that is still unfolding. For Elena, transformation does not mean leaving everything behind, but recognizing the strength she has built along the way.
In this edition, we look beyond the crown to meet the woman behind the public image, exploring the changes that have shaped her, the lessons she has learned, and the dreams that continue to inspire her. Beyond the spotlight, we discover an Elena who is spontaneous, playful, and deeply aware that every experience can become an opportunity for growth.
OBSIDIANA reminds us that darkness does not always represent an ending. Sometimes, it is where a new version of ourselves begins. Because rebirth is not about returning to who we were before, but discovering everything we can become after all we have lived through.
I do not fear the darkness: it is where my form is born.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
ELENA HIDALGO
Beyond the crown, the strength to begin again.
01. Elena, if you were to compare the woman who walked away from the Miss Universe experience with the woman who entered it, what changed within you?
Wow, so many things changed. To begin with, Miss Universe taught me to use my voice. That doesn't mean I didn't use it before, but as a model, I was so used to communicating what brands and designers wanted me to convey. As Miss Universe Costa Rica, I had to express my own way of thinking, my values, and who I am. I think I learned to trust my own voice much more.
02. Obsidian is born through a process of transformation and becomes a stone of extraordinary beauty. What experience in your life do you feel has transformed you into the woman you are today?
I feel it has been the doors that closed. I always like looking back and remembering all the times I was told no. I believe that persisting and refusing to give up at the first obstacle is what transforms you. And I am still transforming every day. Becoming a mother changed me tremendously, too, precisely because it taught me to persevere and never give up.
03. During your journey as Miss Costa Rica and at Miss Universe, there must have been moments of immense pressure. What did you learn about yourself when things didn't turn out exactly as you had imagined?
I learned that I am much stronger than I thought, and that resilience is also a choice.
04. If you could give advice to someone going through a difficult time and feeling as though they are losing confidence in themselves, what would you say?
I would tell them that the sun always comes out after the storm. I know that sometimes it is difficult to see a way out of certain situations, but if we embrace them knowing they won't last forever, they can help us forge an even stronger and more powerful version of ourselves.
05. Beyond the crown, the gowns, and the photographs, what is something about Elena that you know, but that the public might not yet know?
Haha, I am a lot of fun. I love dancing while I cook, singing, and making funny faces at my daughter. I don't think anyone would imagine that side of me.
06. What has been the most beautiful moment being Miss Costa Rica has given you, and which experience has helped you grow the most?
The most beautiful moment Miss Universe Costa Rica gave me was the night I was crowned. I felt that I wasn't the only one being given an opportunity; a mother and a woman over the age of 28 was also being given the chance to represent her country.
And in a way, that also meant giving an opportunity to all the mothers in the country, and to so many women who may no longer be in their twenties, reminding them that they can dream, that they can aspire to become the best version of themselves, and that it is never too late to go after what they want.
07. Let's get to know you off duty: your favorite food, favorite drink, and that little indulgence you can never say no to?
I love pizza and chocolate, haha.
As for drinks, I love water.
And chocolate… that is definitely something I can never turn down. 🤪
08. A quick round: beach or mountains? Cats or dogs? High heels or sneakers? Sunrise or sunset? Sweet or savory?
Beach.
Oh, dogs!
Sneakers.
Sunset.
Sweet.
09. What color do you feel represents your personality, and what song would describe your life right now?
Ahhhh, my personality is a rainbow. 🌈
10. Finally, if you could sit across from the Elena who dreamed of becoming Miss Costa Rica, what would you tell her today?
Wow… I would tell her that she is capable of so much more than she can imagine, and that I am very proud of her.

Quizás no estamos perdiéndonos.

THE MESSAGE OF A 33
Melting to Be Reborn
By Andrés Valverde
I have always believed that there are moments in life when we need to let go of who we used to be to discover who we are capable of becoming.
Obsidian reminds me of exactly that. It is born from fire, when lava cools and takes on a new form. And while I admire its beauty, what fascinates me most is the transformation behind it.
Sometimes, life forces us to change when we feel least prepared. There are goodbyes we never expected, dreams that take a different direction, and versions of ourselves we eventually stop recognizing. We don't always understand why certain things happen, but we can choose what to do with what they leave behind.
Throughout my journey as a 33 in numerology, I have learned that growing also means letting go, starting over, and accepting that we don't need to have everything figured out. It isn't about being strong all the time, but about having the courage to look within, be honest with ourselves, and recognize when it's time to change.
Perhaps we aren't losing ourselves. Perhaps we are simply leaving behind a form that no longer belongs to us.
Today, I want to remind you that you don't have to become someone else to begin again. Sometimes, all it takes is finding your way back to yourself, listening to what you truly want, and daring to take a different path.
Because sometimes, we have to melt to discover our best selves.
